Report: Howe and Newcastle staff are now speaking about signing 'world-class' France World Cup star
Newcastle recruitment staff and Eddie Howe are now already discussing the prospect of signing Marcus Thuram.
The transfer window is due to open next month and the Magpies will be looking to improve on a squad which has soared into the top four.
The Athletic report that Thuram is a player of interest who is now being discussed internally at St James’ Park, while he is away at the World Cup.
Thuram is currently part of the France squad who are trying to defend their World Cup crown and face Poland on Sunday.
Thuram signing now being talked about by Newcastle
Thuram’s contract is expiring at German outfit Borussia Monchengladbach, which makes him an interesting winter option.
He should not cost the earth in the mid-season window, which is a rarity at a period of the season when teams can panic.
Newcastle had to spend big on Chris Wood from Burnley in this year’s corresponding window, triggering a release clause and getting a player from a relegation rival.
Thuram was called up to France’s World Cup squad late and after Karim Bezema’s injury, he could now get more of an opportunity in the knockout rounds in Qatar.
The striker has been hailed as ‘world-class’ by Wolfsburg’s sporting director Marcel Schäfer this season.
He told Kicker: “Thuram is a world-class striker. That has to be said quite clearly. He has world-class format.”
