Celtic are reportedly one of three teams interested in a move for Mexican defender Edson Alverez this summer. As reported by ESPN, the Scottish champions join both Dutch giants Ajax and PSV Eindhoven in the race for the 21-year-old.
The report also details the figures of Celtic’s previous approach for the player. Celtic reportedly made a move for Alvarez in the winter, which is why he will be a familiar name to many Celtic fans.
ESPN report that the offer Celtic made for the Club America defender came to the value of $6.5 million (£5.1 million). That valuation fell well short of the Liga MX side’s valuation of the player.

The report emerges at the same time as an adjacent one from Mediotiempo. They suggest interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers. That report suggests the Mexico international has a buy-out clause of £7.9 million.
So it appears Celtic are not far away when it comes to the valuation of the 22-cap central defender.
The Bhoys need a new centre-back this summer, with Dedryck Boyata leaving for Hertha Berlin, Filip Benkovic’s loan spell coming to an end and interest mounting in Jozo Simunovic.
Celtic will undoubtedly be considering meeting that £7.9 million price-tag and giving Alvarez the task of strengthening a depleted back-line. Their previous offer was just £2.8 million short of America’s valuation. For such a small amount, missing out on Alvarez would be a big mistake.
