Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has made it clear he will not stand in the way of winger Jamie Murphy should he want to leave Ibrox this summer.

The Ibrox boss was talking in his Rangers press conference this week, when he was quizzed on the long-term future of Murphy, whose career in Glasgow has been severely hampered by a serious knee injury.

Gerrard made it clear that he will not stand in the way of any Rangers player who wants to leave for more regular playing time.

“In Jamie’s case, I certainly understand where he is at,” Gerrard is quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times. “He has had a long injury, he has come back and pushed really hard and his attitude has been fantastic.

“He has shown what a quality player he is during this pre-season, he has been outstanding at times in training. But the reality is that he is competing against Ryan Kent to start in this team and we all know the form that Ryan is in at the moment.

“We have also got some other attacking players that can cover that position so it has been really tough for Jamie.”

Gerrard’s comments were followed up later in the day by reports of a Scottish Premiership rival reportedly showing interest in bringing the Rangers winger in from Ibrox.

As reported by the Daily Record, Hibernian have opened talks with Rangers over a potential move for the player.

The Easter Road outfit are said to be keen on either a loan deal or permanent move, with the latter likely to be worth a six-figure fee.

Rangers fans might be disappointed to see the 31-year-old leave this summer, as he never truly got to make the sort of impact he initially threatened to because of his injury troubles.

Making the move to Leith this summer could be the perfect chance for Murphy to rediscover some of his best form once again and enjoy the latter years of his career.

Rangers fans will just hope any sale does not come back to bite them later this season when they face off with the wing wizard.
