Report: Guardiola wants ‘another captain’ to finalise Man City position after loan spell
Man City want to sign Scott Carson on a permanent deal after the on-loan goalkeeper was released by Derby County, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Carson has spent the past two seasons at the Etihad Stadium serving as the reserve for Ederson and Zack Steffen. The 35-year-old has also played a key role in helping young shot-stopper James Trafford integrate into the first-team.
Pep Guardiola now hopes to retain Carson on a permanent deal to finalise his goalkeeper plans for the new campaign. Trafford will likely leave Man City on loan over the summer to gain valuable senior experience next season.
Carson would continue in his role as third-choice for Man City next term if he agrees on personal terms. Steffen will also continue to serve as Ederson’s understudy, with the search for a new striker the priority.
Guardiola will, however, shake up other parts of his squad with Man City to sanction a number of departures. But goalkeeper is one that will remain as-is for another year, with the Spanish tactician finalising his plans for the position with Carson returning.
Carson made his first Premier League start in 10 years by opening last month’s 4-3 win at Newcastle United. The St James’ Park affair was also the four-cap England international’s Man City debut, after 30 appearances as an unused substitute.
TBR’s view: Man City right to retain Carson
Carson may have only played once in two seasons on loan at Man City, but Guardiola is right to seek the retention of his services. The Whitehaven-born goalkeeper offers solid depth, a key figure on the training pitches and is, importantly, happy with being third-choice.
Carson’s impact off the pitch is the main aspect he brings to Man City, though. Guardiola lauds the behind-the-scenes leadership the shot-stopper offers, even if it can go unnoticed. The Citizens boss’ comments from January also showed his desires for a permanent deal.
“We have one player, one keeper that is so important for us and that is Scott Carson,” Guardiola said, via MEN. “He is like a captain behind the scenes, like Fernandinho.
“He is not noticed in the papers or on the field because he is the third keeper. But in the locker room, he is like another captain. He is so important and hopefully he can stay longer with us in the next years.”
