The Daily Record has claimed that Rangers winger Glenn Middleton is close to leaving Ibrox for a second time this season, ahead of a loan move to Scottish Premiership side St. Mirren.
Middleton, 20, broke into the Rangers side under Steven Gerrard last season, clocking up 28 appearances in all competitions and having a hand in 10 goals – scoring five times and creating five more. But he was allowed to leave on loan last summer.
The signing of Sheyi Ojo, Ryan Kent, Jordan Jones, Jake Hastie and Joe Aribo pushed the Scotland Under-21 international down the pecking order – and that remains the case, after managing just eight appearances for Hibernian.
He has since returned to Ibrox following his half-season loan spell at Easter Road, and now Middleton is to try and find better luck at St. Mirren, who sit in 10th place in the Scottish Premiership – but just a point above 11th-placed Hamilton.
TBR’s view – A good move for Middleton?
If Middleton instantly becomes first choice and clocks up 15-20 appearances between now and the end of the season, then yes, a move to St. Mirren will be a good move. Middleton needs top-flight game time to keep his development ticking over.
Having already played nearly 30 times for Rangers, first-team football at a top-tier club is a necessity for Middleton to reach the heights that his potential promises. A move to St. Mirren benefits everyone involved.
