Genoa may be closing in on a move for Sokratis Papastathopoulos, but it appears that they may have also had their eye on another member of Mikel Arteta’s squad, with Gianluca Di Marzio reporting that the Serie A side also approached Arsenal over Shkodran Mustafi.
Mustafi’s future looks set to lie away from the Emirates. As reported by Football London, he is keen to leave in January.
And with his contract reportedly expiring in the summer, it seems unlikely that Arsenal will stand in his way should a decent offer come in.
It does appear that there has been interest. According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Genoa approached Arsenal about Mustafi in the past few days.
Interestingly, Genoa look to be closing in on a deal for Sokratis. The report claims that the Greece international has provisionally said yes to a move. And the Italian side are his priority as he waits for an offer from Fenerbahce.
That would obviously suggest that a move for Mustafi is unlikely. And that may be a blow for both the German and Arsenal.
As things stand, it is difficult to see Mustafi playing too often between now and the end of the season.
So it would perhaps be a boost to Arteta’s January plans if he could offload Mustafi’s wages – worth £90,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – in the near future.
Unfortunately, a move to Genoa now looks unlikely with his teammate set to fill that void instead.
