Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb have claimed that Napoli’s incoming manager Gennaro Gattuso is desperate to sign Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira, as he looks more and more likely to be appointed Napoli boss.
Carlo Ancelotti was sacked on Tuesday evening just moments after guiding Napoli into the last 16 of the Champions League with an excellent 4-0 win over Genk. The former Chelsea boss is being linked with both Arsenal and Everton.
Nspoli are seemingly moving quickly by appointing Gattuso, who won 40 of his 83 league and cup matches at Milan – a decent return with a 48% win rate. He has also managed in Switzerland with Sion, Greece with OFI Crete, Pisa, and Palermo.
Napoli have been previously linked with Uruguay international Torreira, who is said to be open to a move. The £26million Arsenal signing (BBC) is now also a target for Gattuso, who has already held talks with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis.
TBR’s view – If Arsenal can make a tidy profit, then they not?
Torreira has not reached the heights expected of him at Arsenal, since his move from Sampdoria. The midfielder gives the impression that he is very confident, and thinks he is a lot better than he actually is.
If Arsenal can bring in a fee of £30million or more for Torreira, then they would be getting a good deal for a midfielder whose stock has sunk since moving to north London. The Italian style of football would surely suit Torreira’s style.
