Arsenal’s new transfer chief Richard Garlick is said to be in constant contact with Anderlecht over the signing of Albert Sambi Lokonga.

The Athletic say that Arsenal are now edging closer and closer to completing the deal for the young midfielder.

The 21-year-old is a burgeoning talent, and may not yet be a household name.

But Arsenal have apparently been tipped off about his talents, as they have good contacts in Belgium.

Arteta is said to be close to both Anderlecht boss Vincent Kompany and Roberto Martinez, who manages the national side.

Their positive judgement on Lokonga is encouraging for Arsenal fans, but he will still have to prove himself if he is to move to the Emirates Stadium.

Starting role pending?

Lokonga would be making a big step up by moving to the Gunners, but he would surely be required in their first-team.

With Granit Xhaka potentially departing, Arsenal have a space available in their midfield.

The Athletic do say that Arsenal may look to sign another midfielder, even if Lokonga arrives.

But Arteta would likely be keen to give the youngster plenty of game time to aid his development.

Lokonga has been a prominent feature in Anderlecht’s side, and has worn their captain’s armband over the past campaign.

And he surely wouldn’t be particularly content with simply playing a bench role if he does arrive at Arsenal.
