Report: Galatasaray open talks with Arsenal for £49,000-a-week player
Galatasaray have contacted Arsenal over potentially signing Mohamed Elneny before the transfer window closes in Turkey. According to Sky Sports News, the Istanbul-based giants want the Egyptian ahead of his contract expiring next summer.
The Gunners don’t want to lose their player for free and could offload him now. Elneny has fallen way down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta, with the club opting to keep Granit Xhaka.
The midfielder checked in at Arsenal back in 2016 from FC Basel. He has made 132 appearances for the Gunners, scoring five goals and claiming eight assists.
It seemed as though he might be on borrowed time following a loan spell at Besiktas. Their financial issues, however, led to an Arsenal reprieve and last season he made 41 appearances.
Elneny has fallen down the pecking order though. Albert Sambi Lokonga has arrived at the club and with Xhaka and Thomas Partey also in place, chances will be limited.
The 29-year-old is at the age where he needs regular football and Galatasaray could hand him that opportunity. He earns £49,000-a-week and getting that wage away from the club would be helpful after the club’s spending splurge.
Offloading Elneny makes perfect sense for Arsenal
Sitting bottom of the Premier League, it makes zero sense for the Gunners to be stockpiling players. Arsenal don’t even have the luxury of Europe to rotate the squad this year and Elneny will see his chances restricted.
It’s time for Arsenal to start looking towards the future. Keeping Elneny kicking his heels on the sidelines for another season won’t be doing anyone any favours.
Arsenal spent a considerable amount of money in the summer. As a result, there will come a time where the books need balancing and this gives them an immediate chance to recoup some cash.
If Galatasaray are prepared to stick an offer on the table now, then Arsenal must accept their advances and wave a firm goodbye to Elneny.
