Report: Fulham set to complete first summer signing with £8m Southampton deal

The Telegraph have claimed that Fulham are set to complete their first signing of the summer following promotion to the Premier League, with the £8million permanent signing of Harrison Reed from Southampton.

Reed, 25, played 28 times for Fulham on loan during the 2019-20 campaign as Fulham earned an extra-time win in the Championship play-off final over Brentford. He has proved crucial under Scott Parker.

When fit, the England youth international has started for the Cottagers. Two substantial calf injuries saw him miss 16 Championship fixtures, but it appears Parker has been impressed enough that Reed will be signed permanently.

The report claims that Fulham had permanent clauses in the season-long loan deal for Reed – whether they were promoted or not. A smaller fee would have been organised had Fulham stayed down.

However, promotion will see Fulham forced to pay £8million to sign Reed. It remains to be seen if such a deal will hamper Tottenham’s chance of signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

TBR’s view – At £8m, Reed is an excellent signing for Fulham

Very much in the mould of his manager, Reed has been crucial to Fulham’s promotion-winning campaign. Of his 28 Championship appearances, Fulham won 15 and only lost six times.

For such a small figure, Reed would be an excellent signing for the Cottagers. A no-brainer for Fulham who are expected to bring in a number of players following their promotion to the Premier League.
