The Times have claimed that Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has intensified his interest in West Ham United star Declan Rice – just days after the England international starred in the Hammers’ 3-2 win over Chelsea.
Rice, 21, is a boyhood Chelsea fan and came through the ranks with the Blues until he joined West Ham at the age of 14. He has since clocked up 104 appearances for the Hammers, and become an established England player.
Naturally a centre-back, Rice has shown he can offer England-level quality in defence and in holding midfield. Hardly a surprise then, that Chelsea want to bring him back to Stamford Bridge.
Rice impressed as West Ham’s 3-2 win last week highlighted a leak in the Chelsea defence. The Blues bounced back with a 3-0 victory over Watford, but Lampard is now set to intensify his interest in the £80million-rated star (Goal).
TBR’s view – Rice would be a stunning Chelsea signing
Already in his short career, Rice has captained West Ham and it is that kind of passion and leadership that Rice has, that Chelsea need. They need a player that is London-born, and Chelsea through and through.
Andreas Christensen has been in and out of form. Fikayo Tomori is learning his trade. Antonio Rudiger is by far and away the club’s best centre-back, but Kurt Zouma is capable of a mistake. Rice would be a top addition.
