Report: Four English sides want Celtic star ahead of January transfer window
The Daily Record has claimed that Jonny Hayes’ future at Celtic is in doubt as he enters the last six months of his contract with the Scottish champions – and four English Championship clubs are keen to land his signature.
Under the Bosman ruling, the 32-year-old can be approached by clubs interested in engineering a pre-contract agreement from January 1. Such a move would see the Ireland international leave Celtic at the end of his contract.
Hayes joined Celtic in the summer of 2017 from Aberdeen and has since played 61 times for the Bhoys, but the majority of those appearances have been from the bench. His best moment, though, is likely to be the goal he scored against Rangers this term.
But his Celtic spell could be about to come to an end in its third year, with Preston, Middlesbrough, Stoke and Cardiff all interested in his signature. It is believed Neil Lennon had expected talks to open 10 days ago, but nothing has been done.
TBR’s view – Do Celtic need to keep Hayes? Or is it best to wave goodbye?
At 32 years of age, Hayes is only going to get worse. He will begin to lose that yard of pace, injuries will crop up and he needs regular game time to maintain any kind of form. At Celtic, he simply will not get that.
Allowing him to move is the best move for Hayes’ career. Had he been 10 years younger, keeping him on the bench at Celtic would have been the more practical move. But given his age, Hayes needs to be playing football.
