Report: Fonseca and Paratici eye new arrivals at Tottenham; duo want one particular quality
Incoming Tottenham manager Paulo Fonseca will work alongside sporting director Fabio Paratici to recruit new coaches for the first team.
According to Football London, the duo are keen to appoint a team of staff ready for Premier League football. Fonseca and Paratici, in particular, are looking for coaches who can improve on the defensive aspect of the senior squad.
The report also states Ledley King is likely to continue his coaching education at the club. Interim Spurs manager Ryan Mason will also return to his role as head of development within the academy.
Fonseca wants to improve the Tottenham defence
With a centre-back the club’s number one summer priority and Fonseca keen to appoint coaches who are good on the defensive side of the game, improving the backline is crucial for the former AS Roma boss.
Indeed, Tottenham’s leaky defence last season was a big reason behind the north London club’s seventh-place finish. Spurs kept just 12 clean sheets, the same amount as Leeds United, Everton and Brighton and three less than Aston Villa.
However, Tottenham’s goals ‘against record’ of 45 was bettered by five teams in the division. The likes of Manchester United and Liverpool conceding just three more goals than the north London side.
Fonseca and Paratici could solve Spurs’ problems at the back
Whilst Fonseca isn’t regarded as a defensive-minded coach, the football knowledge of Paratici and his understanding of what Tottenham need could be enough to help the first-team regain their solidity in the defence.
With Spurs throwing away plenty of needless points last season, working on the defence will be key to Fonseca winning supporters on his side and injecting hope that the club can bounce back from the torrid 18 months spent under Jose Mourinho.
