Cuco Martina’s hopes of leaving Everton permanently have been dealt a blow. According to Voetbal International, Feyenoord will not exercise their option to buy him.

Martina is currently out on loan at Feyenoord, having spent the first half of the season with Championship side Stoke City. But the Dutch outfit do not want to keep him.

Ex-Everton manager Ronald Koeman was responsible for bringing Martina to Goodison Park. After working with the versatile defender at Southampton, they reunited at Everton.

Martina played 36 times across two seasons with the Saints but has only managed 28 outings since his summer 2017 switch to Merseyside.

The Curacao international was deemed surplus to requirements by Marco Silva. Consequently, he moved to Stoke on loan last summer.

But after struggling in his 18 games for the Potters, Martina’s loan stint was cut short in January. Martina moved back to Holland and joined Feyenoord.

The 29-year-old has since played 12 games, including 11 in the Eredivisie, but Feyenoord are not willing to sign him permanently.

Former Manchester United defender and Reading manager Jaap Stam is Feyenoord’s boss now. But he does not want to spend money on Martina as Feyenoord attempt to balance the books.

Martina will now return to Everton this summer. He is out of contract in summer 2020 so he faces an uncertain transfer window.
