Celtic have fallen behind in the race for Dutch midfielder Adam Maher, according to reports in Holland. De Telegraaf reports that FC Utrecht are in pole position to land the reported Celtic target.
Maher is set to leave AZ Alkmaar this summer on a free transfer. He only joined the Eredivisie side last summer from PSV but his one-year deal is expiring and he is keen to leave.
Last week, Celtic were named among the potential suitors for Maher (De Telegraaf). The Bhoys were chasing Maher on a free transfer, alongside English duo Blackburn Rovers and Queens Park Rangers.
Dutch side Vitesse are also in the hunt, as well as Turkish outfit Fenerbahce and Italian club Brescia. But now it seems Utrecht are well-placed to complete this free transfer.
The 25-year-old played 29 times for AZ this season, scoring twice and providing five assists. When he was younger, Maher was considered one of the best prospects in Europe but his progress has stalled in recent years.
While with PSV, the 5-cap Netherlands international played over 100 games, scoring 17 goals and providing 13 assists. Prior to that, he was at AZ and he looks set to leave the Cheeseheads for the second time in his career.
Celtic could still sign Maher but Utrecht looks the most likely destination. The Scottish Premiership champions would have to move fast if they want to wrap this deal up.
