Report: ‘Fantastic’ player has agreed to join Newcastle United, but the club have delayed announcement
Karius is currently without a club after leaving Jurgen Klopp’s side at the end of last season.
The German goalkeeper spent six years at Anfield but was replaced in the side by shot stopper Alisson.
And the Magpies are desperate to land a back-up goalkeeper for Nick Pope after Karl Darlow has been sidelined with an injury.
Karius has agreed to join Newcastle
The 29-year-old has agreed to join Howe’s men and the finer details of his contract have been signed off.
But the club are delaying the announcement as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
The Magpies have been forced to dip into the free agent market after the end of the transfer window due to being short in the goalkeeping department.
Howe allowed Martin Dubravka to join Manchester United on loan and after Darlow’s injury, Mark Gillespie is the only senior shot stopper at the club other than Nick Pope.
The former Liverpool man has spent time on loan at Besiktas and most recently Union Berlin.
Karius fell down the pecking order at Anfield after the arrival of Alisson.
The shot stopper made two costly errors in the Champions League final in 2018 and has not made an appearance for Liverpool since.
The former Germany U21 international could provide decent back-up for Pope at St James Park, despite being slightly error prone.
