Arsenal regards the situation involving William Saliba as of critical importance during the summer, according to The Athletic.

The 20-year-old was sent out on loan to Ligue 1 for the third transfer window running in the summer.

He was signed from Saint-Etienne for £30 million and immediately loaned back to them in 2019.

In January he headed to Nice for a six-month stint; before joining Marseille on a season-long deal in the summer.

Saliba is doing good things at the Stade Velodrome. He has played 16 times for the club who sit third in the French top-flight.

Despite signing in 2019, Saliba is yet to make a first-team appearance for Arsenal.

Many fans were dumbfounded when he was allowed to join Marseille on loan in the summer.

He is highly rated and plenty of fans wanted to see him handed a chance by Mikel Arteta during 2021/22.

A £50 million signing of Ben White didn’t help his case and he’s struck up a strong partnership with Gabriel.

Saliba will have two years left on his contract in the summer and Arsenal may look to renew his deal.

Regardless of what happens, the situation involving Saliba is deemed critical in a recent report.

Arsenal face fight to convince Saliba

It seems unlikely right now that the young central defender will commit to signing an extension to his current deal.

He will certainly need assurances from Arteta over game time and the damage might well be done.

Saliba has played brilliantly this season and Marseille have handed him the chance to play in Europe.

It would be a shame to see the defender depart having not been given a proper chance in the team.

Arsenal appear to be on the up and perhaps that could at least convince him to stick around in North London.

The ball could be in Arteta’s court though and he could be wise to utilise him next season.
