A report from the Liverpool Echo has detailed why Shani Tarashaj is not set to be released this summer, despite previous reports to the contrary.
The Swiss playmaker was an exciting recruit back in January 2016. As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Everton spent £3 million to sign the talent from Grasshopper, who immediately loaned him back, and his arrival had Roberto Martinez extremely excited.
As reported by the Daily Post, the Spaniard believed that Everton had signed a ‘special’ talent, the best in Swiss football. Indeed, the youngster already had five caps for his nation when Everton swooped.
“I feel he is going to bring something very, very special to us. He is probably the best young talent in Swiss football.
“There are a couple of young players with a good reputation but I think he could have really good future…I feel that he’s going to get fans off their feet. He’s that type of young talent that we like to attract to Goodison.”
Unfortunately, Martinez was sacked before Tarashaj ever got a chance at Goodison Park.
Tarashaj has since had loan spells at Frankfurt, back at Grasshopper and FC Emmen, all of which have been plagued by knee injuries and illness, including angina, tonsillitis, and flu.
It was expected that Tarashaj would be leaving Everton in the coming week but his contract has reportedly been extended.

The ECHO reports that Everton extended his deal at the club until 2021 last summer. However, it was only so his salary could be spread out over two years, allowing his current loan club Emmen to do a deal and for Everton to reduce their own wage bill.
It is reported that Tarashaj will now spend next season with the Dutch side yet again and will leave Everton in June 2021.
The 25-year-old has not played a single game for the Emmen first-team this season, with illness the reported reason. He did score for the club’s under-21 team in November, but it has again been a difficult campaign for the player.
Whilst his Everton contract may run for another 12 months, it seems Tarashaj’s time at the club has still come to an end.
Hopefully, he can have a productive season next term and get his career back on track, wherever he ends up playing his football.
