Report: Everton want £22m star but there could be an issue for Lampard
Everton are long-term admirers of Atletico Madrid star Matheus Cunha, according to The Athletic. However, there could be an issue for Frank Lampard when it comes to signing the talented 23-year-old.
The Brazilian signed for the La Liga club in August 2021. He cost the club £22 million and has caught the eye of several Premier League clubs, including Wolves, Leeds and now the Toffees.
Cunha operates as a centre-forward typically. In 54 appearances for Los Rojiblancos, he’s scored seven goals and claimed eight assists; although he’s yet to find the net during the 2022/23 campaign.
Atletico are likely to want a fortune for the player. He did miss out on a place in the World Cup squad with Brazil, however, so that will at least temper Atletico’s valuation of their striker.
Everton are by no means leading the chase and they could have an issue to overcome. The Blues are unlikely to be able to buy him and as a result, The Athletic claims they could look to structure a deal differently.
With other clubs very keen, Everton could be fighting a losing battle. With that in mind, the blue half of Merseyside could be forced to wait until other clubs have shown their hands in the race to sign Cunha.
Everton admirers of Cunha but the problem could be insurmountable
This would be an intriguing addition to any Premier League club. Cunha is a talented youngster and at 23-years-old he could still improve considerably.
However, his form this season hasn’t been good. A barren spell in front of goal robbed him of a World Cup shot and the fact that Atletico are willing to offload him is perhaps telling.
Everton have slipped close to the danger zone again. As a result, they can ill-afford to have any passengers in their strike force and any player they sign needs to make an impact.
With Wolves and Leeds boasting funds to spend, they might be in the ascendency for this signing.
That might not be a problem for Everton and they must think very carefully before deciding to part with any sum of money for Cunha.
