Report: Everton want Juventus goalkeeper but will only offer £9m

Italian website TuttoJuve have claimed that Everton are interested in signing Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny and are considering an offer – but it is claimed that the Merseyside outfit will not pay more than £9million.

Szczesny, 31, has been first-choice for Juventus this term with 43-year-old Gianluigi Buffon his understudy – though Buffon has still appeared in seven of the Italian side’s 34 Serie A games. But Juve are likely to want a new goalkeeper.

The three-time Serie A winner has only managed to keep eight clean sheets in his 35 games under Andrea Pirlo this summer and a replacement is expected to come in – meaning he will be second choice. It is likely to see him go.

A return to England might be on the cards, six years after he left Arsenal to join Roma initially on loan. It is claimed Everton are considering a move with Robin Olsen likely to rejoin Roma, but the Toffees will only pay £9million.

TBR’s view – Szczesny is a bargain at £9million

But will he really leave Juventus where he could be back-up goalkeeper next season, to join Everton where he is once again likely to play back-up to Jordan Pickford? His game time at Everton is likely to reduce even further.

Juventus will remain in European competition while Everton are struggling to remain in the top six. That means there will be more games at Juve and even if he is the number two, he might get a chance in the cup competitions.

At Everton, the chances are they might not have that luxury to offer. This, of course, is different if Carlo Ancelotti sees Szczesny as the man to replace Pickford – but that seems unlikely, especially given Pickford’s up-turn in form.
