Report: Everton want international champion once scouted by Arsenal and Spurs

Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton are reportedly looking into bringing a veteran international defender to Goodison Park in the summer, according to a report from Torino Granata.

Cameroon centre-back Nicolas Nkoulou currently plies his trade for Serie A club Torino, having made 103 appearances for the club since his 2018 switch from Lyon.

The 29-year-old also has 72 caps for Cameroon, having captained them on occasion, and lifted the Africa Cup of Nations with the Indomitable Lions in 2017.

Torino Granata claims that Nkoulou is “ready to say goodbye” to the club this summer amid interest from numerous suitors in Italy and abroad.

Everton head coach Ancelotti, meanwhile, is likely to be busy in the summer transfer window as he seeks to bolster the Toffees for a successful 2020-21 campaign.

The TG report claims that Everton would be willing to offer Nkoulou “an even richer engagement” than the €1.5million per year (around £1.3million, or £25,000 per week) he currently earns in Turin.

Nkoulou cost Torino €3.5million and the website reckons the Granata stand to make a “significant gain” from any sale.

TBR View:

Nkoulou is a talented and successful defender, having made upwards of 400 competitive senior appearances at club level, not to mention his tournament-winning exploits for Cameroon.

He is a strong tackler, a great reader of the game and passer of the ball, can play out from the back, has strong presence in the air both in defence and attack, and is a vocal, leading presence too.

Indeed, he was linked with Arsenal and Tottenham in January 2019, Tuttomercatoweb claiming both North London clubs were highly interested – all in all he sounds like he could do a good job for the Toffees.
