Everton have put themselves in the race to sign Aaron Hickey, but the Daily Mail has suggested that it is Crystal Palace who lead the race for Manchester City and Celtic target.
Hickey is attracting attention after bursting onto the scene at Hearts last season.
In particular, he was outstanding in two appearances against the Hoops, including one in the Scottish Cup final.
The Daily Mail reports that a number of sides are interested in the 17-year-old.
Everton, Manchester City, Southampton and the Bhoys all want the left-back.
However, the Mail notes that Palace are currently in pole position to sign the defender.
TBR View – Smart move from Everton to join Hickey race
It remains to be seen if the Toffees step up their interest in Hickey at any stage. His form has gone a little more under the radar with Hearts bottom of the Scottish Premiership this term.
But he would arguably be a shrewd signing for the likes of Everton or Manchester City.
Carlo Ancelotti can currently call upon one of the best left-backs in the Premier League in Lucas Digne.
But Leighton Baines is coming towards the end of his career. So there is potentially an opportunity for a youngster to push for that spot behind Digne in the pecking order in the coming years.
If Hickey can build on the promise he showed last season, he should have the ability to play in the Premier League.
And – while so much can change by the time Everton need to consider their plans – he may be edging towards his peak by the time the Toffees need to look at replacing Digne.
