Report: Everton to rival Arsenal for Emerson Royal

Everton have joined the race to sign Emerson Royal, with Spanish outlet Sport suggesting that Arsenal may lead the queue amongst his English admirers.

Emerson looks to be in an incredibly unusual situation. The Real Betis star is expecting to link up with Barcelona for pre-season with Ronald Koeman’s men co-owners of the right-back. They can apparently sign him outright for £7.8 million (€9 million).

But a move to the Nou Camp may not signal the end of speculation concerning Emerson’s future.

Sport notes that he does not want to be a back-up with Barca. And thus, there are a number of clubs eyeing a potential move for the youngster.

Interestingly, Sport suggests that Arsenal lead the charge amongst the clubs in the Premier League keen on signing Emerson. But they report that Everton are also interested.

It does appear to be vital that Carlo Ancelotti lands a new right-back this summer. The likes of Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey have provided cover for Seamus Coleman this season.

Coleman turns 33 later this year. Meanwhile, Godfrey and Holgate are seemingly at their best when deployed in the middle – particularly the former.

So perhaps they will indeed look to make a move to rival teams such as Arsenal, AC Milan and Villarreal for his signature.

They are now seemingly waiting on their former boss to decide whether Emerson is set to be a prominent fixture in his plans next season or not.
