Real Valladolid’s sporting director Miguel Ángel Gómez has revealed talks with defender Mohammed Salisu about a contract extension have reached a standstill, amid recent links with Everton.

Pucela Fichajes recently reported the Toffees were interested in the central defender, who has caught the eye in La Liga this term with some commanding displays at the back.

Salisu, who is also being tracked by Newcastle United, Sevilla and Schalke, is understood to have a €12 million/£10 million buyout clause.

Amid the recent speculation, Valladolid are seemingly trying to protect their asset by holding contract talks with the player, but Gómez has explained an agreement is yet to be reached.

He said (Pucela Fichajes): “Salisu perceives the love of the club because we have made three contracts in thirteen months.

“He knows that he is an important player and that we would like to proceed with that renewal, but today there is a standstill.”

TBR’s view – Everton’s time to strike?

Perhaps this is Everton’s chance to get to work if there is genuine interest in the Ghanaian.

£10 million seems a very reasonable figure and they wouldn’t want that buyout to increase with a new deal.

The Toffees need some extra cover at the back as they currently only have Yerry Mina, Michael Keane and Mason Holgate available to play at centre-half.
