Report: Everton target Colombia star Santiago Arias to fix right-back problem

Santiago Arias will be in action at the Copa America.

Everton have stepped up their search for a new right-back. According to The Liverpool Echo, Atletico Madrid star Santiago Arias is an Everton target.

Marcel Brands is a big fan of Arias, having brought him to PSV, and wants to sign him for Everton. He feels this could solve a problem position for Marco Silva’s men.

Solving the right-back conundrum is one of Everton’s main priorities this summer. Seamus Coleman is the first-choice in this department but one more player is needed.

Everton ideally want to find a younger option to compete with Coleman in the short-term and replace him for the long-term future.

Both Mason Holgate and Jonjoe Kenny had been thought of as potential successors. But Holgate spent last season on loan at West Brom and Kenny has been sent to Schalke on loan for 2019/20.

Silva is unsure on both players and therefore wants another right-back. This is where Arias could come in, while James Justin and Reece James are two other targets.

Arias currently plays for Atletico Madrid but he could be on the move this summer. The Colombia international will be hoping to put himself in the shop window with his upcoming Copa America performances.

TBR’s view

At the right price, Arias is the perfect right-back target. Everton need someone to rotate with Coleman next season before replacing him – just as Lucas Digne has done with Leighton Baines.

The Toffees should keep a close eye on how Arias does at the Copa America. After spells with Sporting CP, PSV and Atletico Madrid, the 27-year-old has a wealth of European experience and could be the ideal choice.

Alternatively, Justin or James could offer more youth and they would help the homegrown quota. But Everton should trust in Brands’ decision; he has not let them down yet.
