Report: Everton starlet Niels Nkounkou in talks over loan move to Standard Liege
Everton are in talks with Standard Liege over a loan move for Niels Nkounkou, according to a report from The Athletic (31/8; 09:18).
The Toffees do not boast a lot of depth at left-back currently. Lucas Digne is the clear first-choice.
And Rafa Benitez is able to deploy the likes of Ben Godfrey and Fabian Delph in the role.
But fans may have been hoping to see Nkounkou feature more often over the coming months.
However, it now appears that the 20-year-old is set to spend the campaign away from Goodison Park.
According to a report from The Athletic on their live deadline day blog (31/8; 09:18), the Toffees are in talks with the Belgian side about a potential loan deal for the Frenchman.
It is claimed that there is a strong possibility that Nkounkou will join Mbaye Leye’s side before the deadline passes.
The Athletic notes that it is thought to be an odd deal due to the lack of options Benitez has on the left of the defence.
Standard Liege loan may leave Nkounkou with difficult task as he looks to prove point to Everton
Nkounkou may benefit from regular game-time. He looks to be in that difficult position where he is good enough to be around Benitez’s first-team on Merseyside, but he is clearly not yet ready to challenge Digne.
But a move to Belgium could be considered a risk. It may be tougher for the youngster to remain on the radar while he is away.
Of course, Everton will keep a close eye on him. But it will be harder to assess how his form while away would translate if he was playing in the Premier League.
