Report: Everton staff think ‘quality’ 21-year-old could get much better in the future, he has ‘vast potential’

Everton may have started the season slowly, but excitement seems to be building around Goodison Park.

A host of new signings have joined Frank Lampard’s side and are getting used to their surroundings.

And a report from The Athletic suggests that Everton staff believe James Garner has ‘vast potential’, but could also contribute straight away.

Garner joined the Toffees for an initial £9m on deadline day, and was Everton’s third central midfield recruit of the summer.

The England under-21 international followed Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye through the door at Everton.

Garner played 70 minutes for England’s Young Lions as they defeated Germany yesterday.

The report says that Garner’s pre-season was disrupted by speculation over his future.

However, he arrived in ‘top condition’ last week to join up with England’s under-21 squad.

Everton staff think Garner has vast potential

Although Garner has yet to make his debut for Everton, he’s already made an impression on the training ground.

Alex Iwobi has been impressed by his ‘quality’ on the ball in training.

He’s already in Lampard’s good books too, who’s been ‘really happy’ with Garner’s efforts to get into the team.

Garner was a vital member of the Nottingham Forest side who achieved promotion from the Championship last season.

The 21-year-old rotated between playing as a holding midfielder and a box-to-box player for Steve Cooper.

His 12 goal contributions show he’s a dangerous player in the final third.

However, he loves a tackle, and is a very solid defensive player, although he did pick up eight bookings.

It’s no surprise Everton’s staff see a lot of potential in Garner.

He could make the £9m fee they paid look like a serious bargain in the future.
