Everton are refusing to give up on a deal for Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes, which at one point had looked to be as good as done.
In April, it was reported by The Guardian that Everton ‘expect’ to make Gabriel their first signing of the summer with Carlo Ancelotti a huge fan of the Brazilian. The fee reported was in the region of €30 million (£27m).
His president at the French club, Gerard Lopez, then confirmed to Sky Sports that the ‘absolute machine’ of a defender was leaving Lille this summer but would not suggest any agreements had been finalised with any club.
It was later reported by The Independent that the Brazilian had even passed an off-site medical for Everton to complete the deal.
The problems seemed to arise due to the global health crisis and subsequent lockdown. Everton could not finalise any deal and other clubs started to wonder if they were missing out.
Gabriel has since been linked with teams across Europe and Everton looked set to lose the player.
However, ESPN is reporting that Everton remain confident they can win the race for the player. They have identified Premier League rivals Manchester United as their biggest transfer threat and that Everton are now ready to ‘accelerate’ their transfer moves.
That means a potential deal for Gabriel to come to Everton should not be ruled out by Toffees fans in what would be a crucial piece of business for Ancelotti’s plans next season.
Hopefully, Everton can finally persevere and get a deal done for this long-term target.
