Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb have claimed Everton scouts were in place on Thursday to watch Germany’s Under-21 clash with Spain – and Sampdoria defender Julian Chabot was the centre of their attention.

Sporting Gijon attacker Manu Garcia opened the scoring for Spain in Cordova, before Germany equalised from a corner through defender Nico Schlotterbeck. Chabot, 21, made his third Under-21 appearance for Germany, starting the match.

The defender has already been on the books for a number of sides, coming through the ranks at Frankfurt before moving to RB Leipzig. He failed to make a senior appearance for either team. He then opted to move to Sparta Rotterdam in 2017.

Getting a taste for first-team football, he joined FC Gronigen for 2018-19 season and then moved to Serie A outfit Sampdoria in the summer for just £3.2million (CalcioMercato). He has broken into the side, starting the last three league games.

Now, Everton have caught wind of Chabot’s impressive rise which has taken him to Germany, Holland and Italy, and sent scouts to watch him play 45 minutes in which he kept the impressive Dani Olmo quiet.

TBR’s view – Everton need a centre-back, and Chabot is certainly a talent

He could be a cheap alternative, too. Signed for little over £3million and playing just three senior appearances since, Sampdoria will know that can charge a fee of £10million or more with Everton willing to spend big.

But anything below £15million – a fee which would be reasonable for Chabot given he is first choice at Sampdoria and a Germany Under-21 international – would also be deemed good business by Everton.

The Toffees waved goodbye to Kurt Zouma and Phil Jagielka in the summer, failing to replace them. Signing a central defender is crucial, and Chabot might just be the ideal recruit.
