Everton have reportedly turned down a bid from Wigan Athletic for midfielder Joe Williams.

According to the Daily Mail, the Toffees have rejected a £1million offer from Wigan for their player.

It is understood that the Championship outfit are expected to come back with an improved bid in the next few days to try secure a deal for him.

Williams has come through the academy ranks at Goodison Park, but is entering the final year of his contract with the Merseyside club.

The 22-year-old has never played a senior game for the Toffees, but has impressed during loan spells.

He caught the eye with Barnsley in the 2017/18 campaign and played for Bolton in the Championship last season.

TBR’s View:

Everton are clearly holding out for a decent-sized fee for Williams, but they should accept the next offer that comes in for him from Wigan.

The central midfielder looks unable to make a breakthrough into Marco Silva’s team and needs to find a home elsewhere.

There is plenty of competition in the centre of the park ahead of the new campaign at Everton, with the likes of Fabian Delph, Morgan Schneiderlin, Tom Davies and Andre Gomes in contention.

The Toffees are renowned for producing young talents and integrating them to the first-team, but Williams may need to take a slightly different path.
