Everton are keen to sign Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United, according to the Athletic.

Future in doubt?

Longstaff’s future at St. James’ Park appears to be in some doubt after the impending arrival of Joe Willock.

Newcastle are set to snap up Willock in the near future, which may leave Longstaff’s chances of playing regular football next season very limited.

And Everton, with Rafael Benitez at the helm, are now said to be monitoring the situation.

Benitez a fan

Benitez was a big fan of Longstaff during his time at the North East, after bringing the central midfielder into Newcastle’s first-team.

Longstaff’s progress has actually slowed since Benitez’s departure, but it seems that Everton could be keen to take him this summer.

If Longstaff was to make the switch to Everton it is likely that he would initially arrive in a rotational role.

But Everton could be aided by an injection of technical quality in their midfield.

The Toffees have plenty of battlers in that area, but arguably lack the creative quality to be able to dictate the tempo of the game.

Longstaff’s ability to pick out long-range passes and shoot from distance could appeal.

Although he would arrive at Everton with a point to prove, after failing to really kick on at Newcastle.

It was not long ago that Longstaff was playing so well that Pep Guardiola admitted that Manchester City could not deal with him (Chronicle), after coming up against him in 2019.

And if he could recreate that sort of form at Goodison Park, then he would be a fine addition Everton’s squad.
