Everton are looking to pip rivals Liverpool in the race to sign Wigan youngster, Joe Gelhardt.
According to reports from the Sun, the Toffees are keen on landing the 17-year-old Latics star.
Gelhardt has emerged as one of the finest young talents in the Championship this season. Despite scoring just the one goal, he has been a regular in the Wigan squad.
Indeed, the youngster has helped drive the Wigan under-18s to the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup. Those performances, mixed with fleeting glances of his talents at first-team level, have caught the attention of onlooking Premier League clubs.
Latics manager, Paul Cook, will know full well that there is a high chance of the club losing Gelhardt. But despite the forward’s obvious talent, Cook has, so far, refused to regularly play the youngster.
Everton, then, will see this as a chance to swoop for the Wigan youngster. Given Gelhardt was born on Merseyside, he could well be open to a move back to known territory.
In his best interests to make Everton move – TBR View
Everton has, historically, been a good place for youngsters to harness their talents. We all know how good Wayne Rooney was, while the likes of Ross Barkley, John Stones, and more recently, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, have all shone at Goodison.
Gelhardt, then, might find it in his interests to choose Everton over anyone else who is interested.
Getting minutes under your belt is always key for a young player. Sitting around on the bench and then spending time on loan at various clubs doesn’t always work out. That is what Gelhardt would get at the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea you would think.
Everton, then, are the perfect club for Joe Gelhardt.
