Everton are reportedly tempted to pay the release clause of River Plate midfielder Nicolas de la Cruz, according to a report in Argentina.

It is suggested by Ole that Everton have been tracking the player for some time and could be tempted to pay his €22 million (£19m) release clause. A top Bundesliga side, that is not Borussia Dortmund, are also said to be keen.

Everton, who were heavily linked with another River midfielder in Santiago Sosa last summer, would be signing a player in good form.

The Uruguayan, who started his career at Montevideo based Liverpool Futbol Club, has scored four goals and provided six assists for River Plate in 2019/20 and is clearly one of South America’s top talents.

Indeed, Manchester City were previously linked. As reported by Ole, Guardiola is a big fan of the player but Everton’s Premier League rivals decided not to push through with a deal. Indeed, as reported by TNT’s Veronica Brunati, Guardiola ‘loves’ De La Cruz.

Everton director of football Marcel Brands has a good track record with bringing in players from South America and the Toffees have recently been linked with a host of players from the continent.

In De La Cruz, who has over 20 caps for the Uruguayan under-20 team, Everton might just be onto a winner.
