Everton have joined West Ham United in the race to sign Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes on loan, according to a report from The Telegraph.

The Telegraph reports that Fernandes could be Premier League-bound this month after falling out of favour at Estadio da Luz in recent weeks.

It is reported that he has held talks with the Hammers about a temporary move to the London Stadium. But it appears that David Moyes will have to see off competition from one of his old clubs if he hopes to sign the Portugal international.

The Telegraph reports that Carlo Ancelotti wants him on Merseyside. The Italian is looking for his first signing after arriving at Goodison Park last month.

TBR View – Fernandes could be an inspired loan signing

Fernandes is a seriously exciting player. He has arguably not shown his best form in Portugal so far this season. But he could potentially prove to be an inspired loan signing for either West Ham or Everton.

He is excellent on the ball, whether he decides to take a player on or pick out a long pass. He is also not afraid to get stuck in and do the defensive work if he is playing deeper.

It is arguably telling that his contract at Benfica includes a £102 million release clause (via Daily Mail).

And landing him could provide either Everton or West Ham with a big left heading into the remaining months of the campaign.
