Report: Everton interested in signing defender who left bitter rivals in 2018

Italian outlet Blog Cagliari Calcio have claimed that Carlo Ancelotti wants to take veteran defender Ragnar Klavan to Everton this month, despite leaving bitter rivals Liverpool just 18 months ago.

Back in the summer of 2016, Liverpool signed 34-year-old Klavan and he spent two years at Anfield – clocking up 53 appearances for the Merseyside club. He left in August 2018, moving to Serie A side Cagliari.

The 126-time Estonia international is set to see his contract expire at the end of the season – but Cagliari do have an option to extend his contract for another season. The temptation to return to the Premier League may prove tantalising, though.

It remains to be seen if Klavan – given his Liverpool connections – would be interested in a move to Ancelotti’s Everton. The Sun have claimed that the former AZ Alkmaar colossus would cost between £1million and £2million.

TBR’s view – Everton need a centre-back, but Klavan should ignore

That is, if he has any admiration for Liverpool fans. Although it would be a good move for a player of 34 years of age to return to the Premier League and be given a bit-part role – it is almost impossible for an ex-Liverpool player to move to Everton.

Everton do need a central defender. Phil Jagielka and Kurt Zouma departed in the summer, and it left The Toffees with just Michael Keane and Yerry Mina as options – while Mason Holgate has been converted into a centre-back.

Klavan would be an average signing but a bargain at £2million. Out of respect, though, the Estonian should reject any advances given his Liverpool past.
