Report: Everton interested in Saint-Etienne starlet Wesley Fofana
Everton are apparently plotting a swoop on Saint-Etienne for their young prospect Wesley Fofana.
As reported by The Daily Star, the Toffees have entered the race for the French teenager, who only made his senior debut in April 2019.
The centre-back has made 11 appearances in all competitions this term, becoming a regular in the starting XI around mid-October – which is around the time William Saliba sustained a metatarsal injury.
Fofana’s performances have led to interest from a number of teams around Europe, and it is thought Saint-Etienne are keen to offer the player a new and improved contract to fend off that interest.
The club struck a deal with Arsenal last summer for Saliba – although he returned on loan for 2019/20 – and don’t want another of their top prospects being poached. In fact, Fofana is seen by the club as Saliba’s heir (GFFN).
Carlo Ancelotti needs extra cover in central defense – at the moment he has just three players for the position in Yerry Mina, Michael Keane and Mason Holgate.
TBR’s view – Everton need experience
Fofana fits Marcel Brands typical policy on transfers, but arguably at this moment in time, Everton could really do with a defender with a bit more experience under his belt.
The Toffees have been weak at the back and need an organiser to come in and be consistent.
Fofana would be a good player for the future, but Everton fans will surely be hoping to see someone else arrive in addition.
