Report: Everton in talks with 96-cap international who’s available this summer

Everton are reportedly in discussions with goalkeeper Sergio Romero, who’s available this summer due to the fact his contract at Manchester United is expiring.

According to The Athletic, the Toffees are in discussions with the 34-year-old about a potential switch to Goodison Park.

However, the report states there is competition from Juventus and Celta Vigo for him.

It is understood that ex-Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti wanted to sign him on loan last summer. But, he stayed at Old Trafford for the final year of his contract.

Romero, who’s got 96 senior international caps for Argentina, has been one of the best understudy goalkeepers in the Premier League for several years.

He’s been cover for David De Sea since he joined Man United back in 2015.

In a six year career with Man United, he kept 39 clean sheets in 61 appearances.

Romero deal seems a no-brainer for Everton

The Merseyside club should do what they can to win the race for Romero’s signature because he looks ideal on paper.

Firstly, Everton won’t have to pay a transfer fee for a player that is experienced at the top level. Secondly, they need to bring in a new shot-stopper to act as cover and compete with their current number one Jordan Pickford. Finally, Romero has always been a top goalkeeper with safe gloves and composure to play out from the back.

Romero would be a really shrewd piece of business.
