Report: Everton in talks to agree loan deal for AS Roma goalkeeper Pau Lopez
Italian website CalcioMercato claim Everton are trying to sign AS Roma goalkeeper Pau Lopez on loan before the end of Monday’s deadline, with talks ongoing between the Italian club and Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
Lopez, 25, has endured a difficult start to life during the 2020-21 campaign. Having signed for Roma last summer, Lopez was immediately inserted as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper – and clocked up 42 appearances last term for Paulo Fonseca’s side.
But this season, Lopez has dropped to the bench for Roma’s first three Serie A appearances. He may consider a loan move, after Swedish colossus Robin Olsen has broken into the starting eleven. Everton, meanwhile, want competition for Jordan Pickford.
Two-time Spain international Lopez has experience in England, failing to play a single match for Tottenham during a loan spell in 2016-17. Now, he could be on his way back to Everton with talks ongoing between the Merseyside club and Roma.
TBR’s view – Everton certainly need Pickford competition
Pickford made another mistake on Saturday afternoon as Everton beat Brighton 4-2 at Goodison Park, failing to hold a tame shot – allowing Neal Maupay to turn and tap home from within the six yard box.
Everton are showing all the signs necessary to break into the top six, if not the top four. But if they are to do so, they need a goalkeeper that can provide a solid base – and Pickford is struggling. Lopez could replace him, or get the best out of him.
TransferMarkt claim Lopez has the same agent as Watford and former Everton star Gerard Deulofeu.
