Report: Everton impressed by 48-year-old in manager interview

Fabio Cannavaro appears to be right in the frame to become the new Everton manager, with The Telegraph reporting that the Italian has impressed in an initial interview this week.

The Toffees are continuing their search for Rafa Benitez’s replacement. Their push to bring Roberto Martinez back to Goodison Park has failed.

Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard are in contention for the job. And The Telegraph has reported that they have heard from sources that they are the only three names in the mix.

Rooney has done an amazing job at Derby. Lampard meanwhile, also received plaudits for the work he did with the Rams. And he impressed many when he stepped up to Chelsea.

But Cannavaro is also in the equation. The Telegraph reports that he has been interviewed this week. And the 48-year-old managed to impress the Everton hierarchy.

It is noted that he speaks good English and is keen to now take a job in this country.

Cannavaro certainly the riskiest option as Everton pursue new manager

Rooney is yet to manage in the Premier League. And a return to Everton would bring about a different kind of pressure to the one he is currently dealing with.

And some may have questions about why Lampard is yet to get back into management almost a year after he left Chelsea.

But there is surely no doubt that appointing Cannavaro would be the biggest gamble of the three. He is yet to manage in Europe, having so far worked in Saudi Arabia and China.

Obviously, he enjoyed a stunning playing career, as did Rooney and Lampard. And Everton clearly feel that he could have the ability to take everyone by surprise if given the job.

The worry is the current Everton hierarchy have not got the best track record to date when it comes to appointing managers.
