According to Calciomercato, Everton have taken the first steps in their attempts to sign Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne.

What’s the story?

Well, if true, Everton could soon pull off one of the signings of the summer.

The Italian news outlet believe the Toffees are currently evaluating whether it’s feasible that Insigne will arrive at Goodison Park.

If they deem a move realistic, you’d expect Marcel Brands to then contact Napoli with an enquiry, or submit a bid.

Calciomercato claim it will be difficult to sign the 30-year-old, who scored 19 goals for Napoli in the 2020/21 campaign.

Insigne’s stock has also risen after he scored two goals to help Italy win EURO 2020.

However, this rumour could have legs. After all, the diminutive forward played under Rafa Benitez in Naples, so the Spaniard knows all about the Italian.

Who does Lorenzo Insigne play like?

Insigne is quite an established figure across Europe. However, if you aren’t familiar with him, a comparison might be helpful.

Interestingly, the Napoli No.24 and captain has been likened to Italy legend Roberto Baggio by his brother, Roberto.

Speaking to Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli (Goal), Insigne’s brother said: “His performances are no longer a surprise to us. Comparisons with Baggio? Indeed his goal yesterday reminds me of the ‘Divine Ponytail’.”

Now, that’s a very bold comparison, as Baggio is one of the best to ever play the game.

The man known as the ‘Divine Ponytail’ won the Ballon d’Or in 1993, in what was a simply glittering career.

In total, the Italian scored 278 goals throughout his wonderful career.

If that comparison doesn’t excite Everton fans, we’re not sure what will.

If Brands gets this deal over the line, it would be a phenomenal signing for the Toffees.
