Report: Everton eye Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti
Everton are interested in signing Samuel Umtiti, with the Daily Mirror (19/8; page 54) reporting that Rafa Benitez could boost their chances of landing the Barcelona star.
The Toffees have been quiet in this window. Two of their three first-team signings have arrived on free transfers.
But perhaps they may be busy in the final days before the deadline.
And one of the players apparently on their radar is Umtiti. According to the Daily Mirror (19/8; page 54), the Toffees hope to take advantage of the issues currently going on at the Nou Camp.
Barca are keen to move the France international on this summer.
It is claimed that Umtiti would prefer to join a club in the Champions League. But it is suggested that moving to Merseyside may appeal due to Benitez’s presence at Goodison Park.
Umtiti move may divide Everton fans amid previous dealings with Barcelona
It would probably surprise few Everton fans that they have been linked with Umtiti.
The Toffees, of course, have signed a number of players from the Catalan giants in the last few years – with mixed results.
Lucas Digne has proved to be an inspired addition. Yerry Mina has been incredibly impressive at times. But Andre Gomes has struggled.
Umtiti has been more of a peripheral figure in Catalonia in the last few years. He actually has not reached 20 appearances in all competitions in any of the last three campaigns.
So it could certainly be deemed a gamble. But with Barca needing to sell players, perhaps Everton sense that there is a bargain to be had.
