Everton defender Matthew Pennington is reportedly set to secure a loan move away from Goodison Park.

According to the Liverpool Echo, the 24-year-old is set to join Championship side Hull City on a season-long loan.

It is understood that the centre-back is scheduled to have a medical today (Wednesday) before completing a move to Hull.

Pennington is poised to exit on loan for the sixth time in his career, with previous spells at Tranmere Rovers, Coventry City, Walsall, Leeds United and Ipswich Town.

He’s a product of the Toffees academy and held his own in recent years during spells in the Championship, but hasn’t done enough to force his way into contention at Goodison.

The English defender has been with Marco Silva’s group in pre-season, but is heading out on loan once again.

TBR’s View:

Pennington surely has to think about a permanent switch away from Merseyside, as he turns 25 in October and is following a similar pattern of loan spells.

He would be an attractive option for a Championship side to buy on a permanent basis and it would be much better for the player if he can find a home.

Everton are short of centre-back options as it stands, with Yerry Mina, Michael Keane and Mason Holgate the main senior candidates.

It’s an alarming observation that Pennington can’t force his way into Silva’s plans as a fourth-choice option and a permanent move away will surely be the end result.
