The Liverpool Echo have claimed that Everton defender Lewis Gibson is likely to sign a new Toffees contract with talks having ‘intensified’ before moving on loan to League One side Fleetwood Town, and play under Joey Barton.

Gibson, 19, is out of contract at the end of the season despite impressing in Everton’s Under-23 side. The centre-back joined the club from Newcastle in the summer of 2017, and has since become a regular for Everton’s second string.

The Northern Echo claimed earlier this month that Newcastle were considering a move to bring Gibson back, less than three years after they sold him to Everton for £6million (Northern Echo). Now, a new contract and a loan is expected.

The report claims talks have intensified over a new deal, while a loan is also being orchestrated for Gibson. It is also expected that Gibson will be off in the summer, for another loan.

TBR’s view – New deal and loan for Gibson is perfect

Gibson has the potential to become an important player for Everton, especially given The Toffees are hardly boasting multiple options in central defence. Only Mason Holgate, Yerry Mina and Michael Keane are options.

Handing him a new deal and taking the pressure of Gibson is crucial, if he is to maximise his potential. Let him go on loan to Barton’s side, after agreeing an extended contract, and give him all he needs.
