Report: Everton interested in signing ‘amazing’ Champions League player after he’s put on transfer list

Everton are now interested in signing Inter Milan left winger Robin Gosens in January.

A report from FCInterNews suggests that Everton and Bayer Leverkusen are considering a move for the German international.

The 28-year-old Gosens is currently on-loan at Inter from Atalanta, where he was an important player in the Bergamo-based side reaching the Champions League.

However, he joined their Serie A rivals on an 18-month loan deal in January, but is now unhappy with his game time.

Gosens did have the opportunity to join Newcastle, but admitted he ‘never really considered’ the move.

Bayer Leverkusen tried to sign him in the summer, but didn’t want to include an obligation to buy in any loan deal.

FCInterNews suggests that Everton are looking for another left-sided defender and are now interested in signing Gosens.

And a report from CalcioMercato suggests that Inter Milan would be willing to listen to offers for Gosens.

The deal could end up being slightly complicated because Gosens is still technically an Atalanta player.

Gosens is capable of playing as a winger or in a more defensive capacity.

Frank Lampard currently has Vitaliy Mykolenko and Ruben Vinagre to choose from at left-back.

However, the on-loan Portuguese defender has hardly played since arriving in the summer, and Gosens would certainly represent an upgrade.

Everton interested in signing Gosens

Gosens is a very attacking wing-back, and can play as a midfielder or winger at times.

His record of 50 goal contributions in 157 matches for Atalanta shows his prowess in forward areas.

He’s featured in every one of Inter Milan’s Champions League matches this season after they eliminated Barcelona.

He’s played 14 times for Germany, and scored and provided two assists against Portugal at last year’s European Championships.

His former national team manager Joachim Low once described him as ‘amazing’, but new coach Hansi Flick has been less inclined to select him.

Lampard has recently said that he wants Mykolenko to improve on his attacking output.

If Everton signed Gosens, he would certainly offer plenty of energy going forward.

However, Lampard has preferred playing a four at the back system this season, something Gosens wouldn’t be used to playing in.

He would likely leave Conor Coady and James Tarkowski very exposed down the left flank.

However, Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye tend to sit quite deep, and could easily cover for him.

Everton being interested in signing Gosens would be a further signal of their intent to improve the squad sensibly.

A loan with an obligation to buy would also allow them to defer any big payment until next season.
