Report: Everton considering new contract for Gylfi Sigurdsson

Everton are said to be considering handing a new deal to Icelanding midfielder, Gylfi Sigurdsson, according to a report from the Daily Mail.

The Toffees have been doing well this season but lost 1-0 to West Ham yesterday to make it a poor start to 2021. However, Sigurdsson, in the absence of James Rodriguez, has hit form akin to that of his Swansea days.

His winner at Sheffield United was much like the Sigurdsson of old and now, the Toffees could be set to reward the midfielder with new terms.

It is believed his current deal expires in 2022 but Carlo Ancelotti is impressed with the Icelandic star. The Italian, then, could choose to try and tie down one his more experienced players.

Sigurdsson joined Everton for around £45m back in the summer fo 2017. Since then, he has played under a host of managers but appears to be flourishing under the guidance of Ancelotti.

A new deal could well be Sigurdsson’s last big one of his career, given he will be well into his 30s by the time his current one expires.

Sigurdsson has stepped up and deserves this – TBR View

Most people probably thought Sigurdsson was done at Everton when Ancelotti spent so much on new midfielders in the summer.

But he has stepped up to the plate and proven to be a fine player for the Toffees capable of slotting in across the midfield set up.

He deserves any new deal that comes his way and most Evertonians would probably be happy to see the Icelandic star remain on Merseyside for the time being anyway.
