Report: Everton ‘close’ to agreeing move for Barcelona defender Jean-Clair Todibo

Spanish outlet SPORT have claimed that Everton are ‘close’ to agreeing a deal with Barcelona to sign young centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo this summer, for a fee of just £21.8million.

Todibo, 20, joined Barcelona from French side Toulouse in January 2019 but after just five first-team appearances, the France Under-20 international was shipped out on loan to Schalke – where he has played alongside Jonjoe Kenny.

Though he has played seven times for Schalke, numerous injuries have prevented Todibo from showing Barcelona what he is really capable of. With the global health crisis making clubs struggle financially, Barcelona are willing to sell.

Indeed, they are looking for an upfront fee of £21.8million, while Everton are only offering £17.4million and the rest in add-ons. The two clubs are continuing to negotiate but the feeling is a deal will be done. Todibo is happy to join Everton.

However, it is claimed other clubs have asked a out Todibo and an eleventh-hour bid is also expected. But it seems as though Carlo Ancelotti is closing in on making his first signing of the summer.

TBR’s view – Todibo is just what Everton need

First and foremost, Everton need cover at centre-back. Mason Holgate has impressed alongside the inconsistent Yerry Mina and Michael Keane, but that about sums up Everton’s options – after they lost both Kurt Zouma and Phil Jagielka last summer.

At a decent fee, Todibo has enormous potential and although he will not start to begin with – a few months or a season down the line, Todibo will be first choice. Do not let his lack of appearances fool you, Everton will be picking up a bargain.
