Everton are getting closer to completing the signing of Real Madrid trickster James Rodriguez, according to Sky Sports.
The Colombia international has played under Carlo Ancelotti twice before with Los Blancos and at Bayern Munich.
Everton are hoping to hand Rodriguez a three-year deal with the international only having 12 months to run on his existing contract.
Rodriguez has enjoyed a trophy-laden six years at the Santiago Bernabeu but recently he has fallen out of favour under Zinedine Zidane.
The playmaker has won the Champions League twice and the La Liga title on two occasions during his time in the Spanish capital.
During 2019/20, Rodriguez played just 14 times under Zidane and was largely out of favour under the Frenchman.
The Express claim that the forward earns £280,000-a-week and it’ll be interesting to see what sort of deal the Toffees can offer him.
Everton finished 12th last season and that simply won’t do for the Toffees hierarchy or indeed Ancelotti.
The Italian won’t have come to Merseyside for mid-table mediocrity and next season will be the time to kick on.
He has previously stated his admiration for Rodriguez, telling Sky Sports: “James Rodriguez? I like him, I like a lot as a player. I have to be honest, I like him a lot. But he is a Real Madrid player.”
TBR View – Stellar signing needs to be the start of a busy summer
The signing of Rodriguez would be a coup for Everton and it’s the sort of signing that supporters would have dreamed about when Ancelotti was appointed.
His arrival needs to be just the start though and it’s important the club adds more players to the manager’s ranks.
It’s going to take more than one player to revive Everton and supporters will hope Rodriguez will tempt a few other players into signing for the club.
