Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo have claimed that both Everton and West Ham United have ‘sounded out’ a move to sign Athletic Bilbao defender Unai Nunez – with the player considering a loan move away from the club this summer.
Nunez, 23, was in and out of the Bilbao side last season – managing only 20 La Liga appearances despite being a one-time Spain international. During Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Granada, Nunez remained an unused substitute in the first 2020-21 outing.
The report states that Everton and West Ham are considering a move for Nunez, who has a release clause of £27.5million. Nunez wants to go on loan and although he has three years left on his contract, he wants to show Bilbao what they are missing.
Nunez shares the same agent with new Manchester City signing Ferran Torres, as per TransferMarkt – with all signs pointing towards a move to the Premier League. Whether Bilbao are willing to sanction a move, remains to be seen.
TBR’s view – Nunez would be a top Everton and West Ham addition
For Everton, the Toffees need a central defender. Mason Holgate, Michael Keane and Yerry Mina propose the only options at centre-back for Everton – while West Ham are seemingly keen on a defender, with James Tarkowski being linked.
Nunez is a top player. A ball-playing centre-back, he has everything going for him at the moment – except from game time. A move to England would suit his game and Everton and West Ham need him, but it all hinges on Bilbao’s stance.
