German newspaper Bild have claimed that Everton and Newcastle United are interested in signing Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie – and the Bundesliga side want £22.5million for the wonderkid.
McKennie, 21, has starred for Schalke since joining the German side from MLS side FC Dallas in the summer of 2017. The 19-time USA international has clocked up 91 appearances for Schalke.
The midfielder is dreaming of a move to the Premier League this summer, saying just that in May: “This is my next goal. It was always my dream to play there,” as per Bild’s report.
Newcastle and Everton are looking to take advantage – though they are just two of four English clubs interested, with two sides unnamed. Schalke need to bring in some cash to cover the £177million lost during the health crisis.
TBR’s view – Which club suits McKennie best?
Everton certainly need central midfielders. Fabian Delph has struggled for form, Jean Philippe Gbamin has struggled for fitness and Morgan Schneiderlin has left. It leaves them slightly bare in the middle of the park.
McKennie, who can also offer cover as a right-back or a centre-back, would be ideal for Everton. But Newcastle need him just as much – given Nabil Bentaleb only on loan from McKennie’s Schalke, and Matty Longstaff could leave.
He would certainly improve either side, and both teams need a player like McKennie.
