Report: Everton also in the hunt for £36m star who wants to emulate Xabi Alonso
Everton are set to challenge Arsenal to the signature of Marc Roca, a player who has been dubbed the next Xabi Alonso by many.
Everton have previously been linked with a move for the Espanyol star and it appears that interest has not waned.
El Gol Digital reports that Everton have asked the Barcelona club about the player and it would seem the Toffees are set to battle Arsenal for his signature.
The report claims that Espanyol will not be interested in selling the midfield maestro for less than his current €40 million (£36m) release clause, which could make things more complicated for Everton.
SPORT recently suggested Arsenal would try and undercut that fee with a lower offer but Espanyol are staying strong in their valuation.
Roca is an undoubtedly massive talent who has found himself compared to both Sergio Busquets and former Liverpool hero Xabi Alonso in the past.
In fact, the player even made the comparison himself in conversation with La Liga Lockdown in 2018.
“I’ve always liked Xabi Alonso. From a very young age, I wanted to be like him. He’s an amazing player, and I hope one day to get close to what he did because I think he’s one of the best midfielders in history.
“He’s a very complete player, offensively and defensively. I have always set my sights on him.”
Alonso was an absolute star across Stanley Park for Everton’s Merseyside rivals Liverpool and the Toffees would undoubtedly be hoping that Roca can have a similar impact should he make the move.
It seems a transfer battle is on the verge of getting underway and Everton will no doubt be hoping to win it.
